Northeast students win medals in German exam

Nine Northeast High School students received medals for scoring above the 90th percentile in the national German exam sponsored by the American Association of Teachers of German.

German II winners include: Zibija Cavcic, Ibrahim Cavcic, Nadejda Iotzova, Jasmina Hodzic, Tanja Prodanovic and Alisa Kadiric.

German III winners were: Alisa Janjos, Slobodan Culic and Asmir Pervan.

Asmir Pervan earned a perfect score and Nadejda Iotzova received the Florida chapter of the American Association of Teachers of German nomination for the senior trip award.

10 students win national writing, art awards

Ten Pinellas County students are national award winners in the Scholastic Art and Writing competition. Regional gold award winners submitted for competition following judging in February resulted in two awards in art and eight in writing.

Allison Schnur from Bay Point Middle School received a gold award for her short story Sea of Betrayal. This is the first time a Pinellas County student has won a national gold award in the writing competition.

Michael Vasquez from the Pinellas County Center for the Arts at Gibbs High received an American Vision award for his drawing Homage to Red Grooms and Lindsay Palmer of East Lake High received an American Voices award for her short story Avalon Pier.

These students are silver award winners:

Sarah Johnson, Pinellas County Center for the Arts at Gibbs High, for an untitled painting; Chase Finch, Bay Point Middle, for his science fiction-fantasy Apocalypse; Drew Harwell, Bay Point Middle, for his short story Me and Myself; Kelly O'Neil, East Lake High, for Mud Pies, a humor piece; Danielle Sipple, East Lake High, for her poem Gorgeous; Jillian DiBiose, Tarpon Springs Middle, for her poem The Radiant Sky; and Alice Miano, Tarpon Springs Middle, for her personal essay-memoir A Memorable Struggle.

The regional Scholastic Art and Writing competition is a program of the St. Petersburg Festival of States in cooperation with Pinellas County Schools.
