Art beat A look back at Sarasota's art history
By MARY ANN MARGER, Times Art Critic © St. Petersburg Times, published July 7, 2000 SARASOTA'S BEST - Everett Shinn, Jon Corbino, Julio de Diego, Richard Anuszkiewicz, Syd Solomon, Philip Guston, Ben Stahl, Jimmy Ernst, Hilton Leech, John Chamberlain -- it reads like an art history book, but all were part of Sarasota's vibrant art scene during much of the 20th century. The artists are the subject of "Multiple Visions: A History of Art in Sarasota," opening with a reception from 5 to 7 p.m. today at Selby Gallery, Ringling School of Art and Design. The director's tour is at noon Monday at the gallery. Marcia Corbino shares reminiscences at Selby Public Library at noon July 17. Summer gallery hours through Aug. 18 are noon to 4 p.m. weekdays. GULFPORT WALK - Highlights along Gulfport's monthly First Friday gallery walk tonight include Jon Swift's copper works at Studio Seven Lamps and Antiques and the closing reception for the Millennium Pride Exhibition at Positive Expressions across the street. HOT SUMMER SHOW II - The second of Clayton Galleries' trio of summer shows featuring gallery artists opens Wednesday and continues through Aug. 12. On view are works by noted Florida artists including Billie Hightower, Lynn Davison, George Pappas and Jeff Whipple. Hours are 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday through Friday and 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday.
