Youth program seeks grant

The $20,000 grant would go toward a pavilion for recreation. The structure would allow kids to play outside with some protection from the elements.

CARROLLWOOD -- The after-school and summer youth program at Plantation of Carrollwood has far outgrown its small beginnings.

In less than three years, the original 840-square foot trailer has been replaced with one more than four times larger. And enrollment has nearly doubled with 170 kids in the summer camp and 125 in the after-school program.

Now the Plantation youth program is seeking grant money that could make the program even better for the children it serves.

Program administrators have asked the county for $20,000 to build a 640-square foot metal pavilion that would be part of the recreational facilities.

"It would give the kids some more room to play in out of the sun and out of light showers," said Plantation property manager Tom Jones. "It would add to the desirability of the program."

The development's youth programs serve children ages 5 to 17 and are managed by Boys & Girls Club staff. However, the Plantation Homeowners Associations provides the facilities and utilities. Jones said there are 50 children on the program's waiting list.

Most participants are Plantation residents, but the program is open to children who live elsewhere. Parents pay the Boys & Girls Club $300 a year or $100 a semester for each child enrolled.

The $20,000 grant that Plantation has sought is part of $500,000 the county has set aside to help children's programs. The money will be awarded to approved applicants by September 30.
