TAMPA -- U.S. Senate candidate Bill Nelson will get some help raising money from the White House. Nelson, the state insurance commissioner, confirmed Thursday that President Clinton will speak at fundraisers for him on July 31 in Tampa and Palm Beach. The presumptive Democratic nominee is facing Republican U.S. Rep. Bill McCollum of Longwood -- one of the House managers for Clinton's impeachment trial.
Central Command gets new leader
TAMPA -- Secretary of Defense William S. Cohen presented the command flag to Gen. Tommy R. Franks during ceremonies Thursday for U.S. Central Command, based at MacDill Air Force Base. In the ceremony at the Tampa Marriott Waterside, Franks replaced Marine Gen. Anthony C. Zinni, CENTCOM commander since 1997.
CENTCOM, a command comprising personnel from all the military branches, is headquartered at MacDill and oversees all U.S. military forces in the Persian Gulf and the Horn of Africa.
