3-year-old left in parked carBy Times staff writer © St. Petersburg Times, published July 8, 2000 LARGO -- A Largo woman was arrested Thursday after her 3-year-old son was left in the family car, parked in the sun for about 30 minutes outside a supermarket. Indian Rocks paramedics treated the boy for minor heat exposure, but he did not require hospitalization. His mother, Dawn Marie Gummel, 35, was charged with child neglect. Gummel of 9607 135th St. N was being held Friday at Pinellas County Jail in lieu of $5,000 bail. According to jail records, she took her son with her to a Publix at 12022 Indian Rocks Road about 6 p.m. Thursday and forgot about him. He was left, with a seat belt on, alone in the car. Largo Officer Frank Parr said customers saw him in the car and coaxed him to undo his seat belt. They then got him to unlock a car door and rescued him. Gummel told Parr she did not realize her son was missing or in the car for about 30 minutes, jail records showed. She said she realized he had been in the car when she heard customers talking about it. The boy was released to the custody of his father. © St. Petersburg Times. All rights reserved. |
