Local tournaments are in full swingBy ALEX LYNCH © St. Petersburg Times, published July 9, 2000 It was a busy week for the Little Leaguers with all-star tournaments under way. District 5 started on Wednesday and District 12 continued from its start on July 1. The Florida Little Major League wrapped up its tournament with Fossil Park winning a state-tournament berth in Tallahassee. Here are some highlights from around the county. DISTRICT 12: The Dunedin American majors baseball team defeated Hudson 13-3 Wednesday behind the strong pitching and hitting of Tyler Schmidt. He threw a complete game and had a grand slam. John Arata added a three-run homer and Brian Bowen had three RBI. Thursday the team clinched a berth in the semifinals by beating East Lake 3-2. Arata struck out 13 and allowed four hits. With the game tied at 2, Schmidt came through again winning the game with a homer in the bottom of the sixth. The Oldsmar Senior baseball team remained undefeated Wednesday by beating Largo 11-4. Starter Garrett Buckles got the complete-game win with eight strikeouts. Michael Guido and Nick Newsted combined for five hits and six RBI and Chris Estep had two hits and three runs. Oldsmar's final game in pool play against Safety Harbor was postponed due to rain Saturday and will be played today at 1 at Engelbert Complex in Dunedin. DISTRICT 5: The Southwest majors softball team topped Gulfport 9-0 in the opening round Wednesday. Melissa Milroy, Maryn Schmidt and Morgan Hugart combined for the shutout on the mound. Southwest continued its winning ways Thursday by beating Northeast 6-2 with Milroy getting the win. Kaitlyn Holland, Giana Barrancotto and Christina Hess had key hits. In junior softball, Seminole defeated Northeast 12-1 for a place in the final. Pitchers Emily Milroy and Amy McGathey combined for the win. McGathey, Jessamyn Sanfilippo, Alexis Stillwell and Allisa Rayl provided the offense. Seminole will play the winner of the losers bracket Tuesday night at 7. FLML: Fossil Park won the district championship with a 12-1 victory over Seminole. Jonathon Phin struck out eight and allowed two hits for the win. Phin, Joey Tribou, Austin Yee and Austin Gaines all had RBI and Greg Hott added a homer. Fossil Park traveled through the losers bracket to get to the final after a first-round loss to Northwest. It outscored the its opponents 57-3 after the first round. Phin threw two shutouts and Tribou was named offensive player of the tournament.
