    Woman hospitalized after shooting

OLDSMAR -- A woman was seriously injured Sunday when she was shot in the back with a .22-caliber rifle at 1922 Cutty Bay Court. The woman, whose name was not released, was taken by helicopter to Bayfront Medical Center in St. Petersburg. When deputies arrived at the house, they found the woman's estranged husband with a rifle in the garage about 8:30 p.m., said sheriff's spokesman Sgt. Greg Tita. The husband was being questioned by investigators late Sunday.

    Police chase ends in death

SANFORD -- A man sitting in a lawn chair on a sidewalk was killed early Sunday when a driver being chased by police lost control of his vehicle and it smashed into him and a parked car.

Killed was Russell DeVaughn, who would have been 20 on July 19, said spokesman Steve Olson of the Seminole County Sheriff's Office.

The chase started in the parking lot of the Seminole County Jail, said Olson. A woman involved in a heated argument with her boyfriend drove to the jail to get help, but fled when the boyfriend drove into the parking lot after her.

A deputy on patrol saw the boyfriend, later identified as Ansel Jerome Jackson, 24, try to hit the woman's car with his, Olson said.

The deputy tried to get Jackson to pull over, but he sped away, only to lose control of his vehicle a few minutes later and strike DeVaughn, Olson said.
