Registration begins for child-care programsSPRING HILL -- Starting Sunday, the Hernando County Family YMCA will accept registration for its before- and after-school child-care programs at the following locations: YMCA, 1300 Mariner Blvd., Spring Hill; YMCA Child Care Office, 12597 Spring Hill Drive, Spring Hill; and all summer camp locations. Entertainers needed for Italian Culture NightBROOKSVILLE -- Entertainers and participants are needed for the Jerome Brown Community Center's Italian Culture Night, which will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Aug. 24. Those interested in providing ethnic food, music or dance, poetry readings or storytelling, or displaying artwork are encouraged to call or visit the center for an application. Display booths are available for $5; those wishing to sell items during the event pay $10 for the booth. The community center is at 99 Jerome Brown Place, off Darby Lane, in the Tom Varn Park complex. The event will be free for youths ages 17 and younger; adults pay $1. Free workshop explains rain barrel makingBROOKSVILLE -- Florida Yards and Neighborhoods will present a workshop, "How to Make a Rain Barrel," from 9:30 to 11 a.m. Saturday at the Hernando County Cooperative Extension Service, 19490 Oliver St. The workshop will include information about the benefits of rainwater harvesting. Participants will also be taught how to make, set up and use a rain barrel. The workshop is free. A limited number of completed rain barrels are available for $20. Those wishing to purchase one must call in advance to reserve one. Payments can be made in advance or at the workshop. Checks must be made payable to the Hernando County Master Gardeners. Also, Hernando County Utilities Department will credit the water bills of county water users for the amount paid for their rain barrels. A rain barrel does not need to be purchased to participate in the workshop. For information, call 754-4433.
