Three semitrailer trucks stolen from warehouseBy Times staff writer © St. Petersburg Times, published July 11, 2000 TAMPA -- Three semitrailer trucks were stolen Sunday from a south Tampa warehouse. Police believe an organized ring of thieves is responsible. The thefts occurred at 5605 S Westshore Blvd., a warehouse owned by Gulf Central Transportation. Three Freightliner trucks and the trailers attached to them were taken after 8 p.m. Sunday, said Tampa police Detective Mike Palmieri. The equipment is worth about $300,000. One truck and one trailer have been recovered, but the detective said thieves usually don't want trucks and trailers. Instead, they're looking for high-priced foods to resell around Miami. But these thieves found no such products. The truck recovered was found in Hialeah. The recovered trailer was located at a convenience store in Bradenton, authorities said. It was full of dog food. The two missing trailers likely contain canned goods instead of the lobster or shrimp thieves covet, said Rick Onderko, vice president of Gulf Central Transportation. He said Sunday's thefts were the first in the company's 37-year history. © St. Petersburg Times. All rights reserved. |
