Tarpon Springs quarterback Achilleas Houllis has signed with Indiana State, a Division I-AA school in Terre Haute.

Houllis, a Times first-team All-Pinellas pick and honorable mention all-state pick in 2000, completed 78 of 139 passes for 1,705 yards with 23 touchdowns and 6 interceptions as a senior. He led the Spongers to a 9-2 record and a state playoff berth.

Houllis, 6 feet, 200 pounds, was suspended from Tarpon Springs' playoff game, a 38-19 loss to Lakeland Lake Gibson, for undisclosed reasons.

However, Houllis starred in the Palms/Pinellas all-star game, earning offensive MVP honors.

He also played well in the Global Junior Championship in January, in which Pinellas County players, representing the United States, defeated European and Canadian all-star teams for the title.

Houllis was a second-team all-county choice as a junior and threw 12 touchdown passes as a sophomore.

Indiana State, a member of the Missouri Valley Conference, equaled the worst season in school history last year, finishing 1-10.
