Note to future administrators: Keep your resumes handy

© St. Petersburg Times, published July 12, 2000

Editor: Dear Paul McIntosh, and all future candidates for Hernando County administrator, do not, under any circumstances, forget to keep your resumes up to date. You never can tell when they will be useful.

You see, the county commissioners do not want you to really administrate. They would prefer someone whose head nods a lot and who tells them what a great job they are doing. I have suggested before buying a life-size cardboard cut-out of any good cartoon character and placing it in the administrator's office. We probably could pave half a street with the money saved.

No one wants to pay taxes. That's a wonderful idea! No one wants to pay for services. That's a great plan! We'll just walk outside to the money tree, shake it, sit back and relax.

The bottom line is until the commission allows the administrator to do his or her job, until the people of Hernando County decide the streets are not paved with gold, or paved at all for that matter, until someone realizes we live in the real world, this area will continue to ... to ... I really don't know where.

Fighting the isolation of a hearing impairment

Editor: I am hearing impaired and cannot hear voices. Could you possibly put this letter on the Opinion page of your newspaper asking if any other person who has similar problems and would like to meet somewhere and play cards or plan some other kind of social activity?

Maybe there is someone who knows lip reading who can instruct some of us. It is very difficult for us to communicate with people.

Those who do not have the problem don't realize how much one seems to be out of place because we are such a problem to them. I seem to talk too loud because I cannot hear myself and people put their hands over their ears and give me a very hostile look.

Life just seems to be a drag and too much trouble for some people. If you have any solutions to maybe make our lives a little better, I'm sure it would be appreciated. My address is in the telephone book, if anyone would care to write to me.

Non-residents suspect in incorporation debate

Editor: Re: Incorporation would create more isolation, July 4 guest column by Allan Tyler.

I totally agree with Mr. Tyler. However, he failed to mention that some members of the Spring Hill Incorporation Committee do not reside in Spring Hill.

Why is a non-resident of Spring Hill so much concerned about incorporating the community? What does he expect to gain by incorporating a community that he has nothing to do with and does not even reside in?

Somehow, I get the feeling that someone out there, who will not be affected one way or another by this change, is out to promote his own agenda by hiding behind the Spring Hill Incorporation Committee. One begins to wonder what that agenda might be.

HMO doesn't care about elderly county residents

Editor: I read letters pertaining to many subjects in your paper, but few of them, if any, refer to the plight of seniors in Hernando County who will soon be without medical insurance programs. The latest to announce pulling out is the Humana Gold Plus HMO program, which effects more than 9,000 people.

This company has no regard for these people, of which I am one. They advertise in the newspapers and on television of their wonderful health maintenance programs, seeking to sign up new applicants in other counties, while at the same time they are going to cancel our coverage effective the first of the year.

They have been charging us a monthly premium not charged in other areas. We need help and no one seems to care, especially the government, which Humana blames for it all.
-- Jack Rudolph, Spring Hill
