Third candidate forum set for cable access channel
By JEFFREY S. SOLOCHEK © St. Petersburg Times, published July 12, 2000 BROOKSVILLE -- Another candidate forum will appear on Hernando County access Channel 19 this summer. Just two weeks after the County Commission agreed to air events sponsored by only two groups, the Greater Hernando County Chamber of Commerce and the Spring Hill Civic Association, commissioners agreed Tuesday to add a debate sponsored by the Good Government League to the list. The commission did not waive any of the fees, estimated at $250, associated with videotaping or airing the program. Commissioner Nancy Robinson argued against the approval. "If we begin to go beyond the policy which was set . . . you're really going to have to understand if you say yes to one more group, you're going to have to say yes to all of them," Robinson said. "I would be very unfavorable to do that, because it would be very cost-prohibitive." Chairman Paul Sullivan agreed, noting that he had recently received a list of more than 40 community organizations that operate in the county. "At what point do we say no?" Sullivan asked. Good Government League president Chester Peters suggested that the county did not yet have a policy in place and that it still was being written by staff. As a result, he said, the Good Government League should get the same treatment as the chamber and the civic association. Commissioners Pat Novy and Bobbi Mills jumped to accept that line of reasoning. "I'm just asking for fairness so we can have everyone share what they know with the public," Novy said. Commissioner Chris Kingsley supported the motion only after the requested fee waivers were removed. The Good Government League debate, which will feature candidates for state House District 44 and U.S. Congress District 5, is scheduled for Aug. 11 in the County Commission chambers. An air date has not been set. © St. Petersburg Times. All rights reserved. |
