ZEPHYRHILLS -- A 16-year-old girl chatting on her mobile phone Wednesday lost control of her car and hit a metal trash bin, sending the car airborne.

Jessica Davis, 7409 Fort King Road, and her passenger, another girl who was not identified, both suffered injuries in the accident, which happened on Chancey Road.

Davis' friend, Robert Darby, was on the phone with her when the wreck happened.

"She told me to hold on a second, and the next thing I know, all I heard was screaming," said Darby, who hurried to the crash site. "It scared the hell out of me."

Witnesses and a Florida Highway Patrol trooper said Davis was driving the black 1993 Infiniti J30 east on Chancey Road near Diana Drive when the accident happened.

She drove off the road onto a grassy shoulder, then over-corrected in an attempt to get back on the road. She then spun across the road and into the trash bin, which witnesses said caused her car to flip up in the air and roll over a wire mesh fence.

The wreck destroyed part of the fence and cleared out a row of mailboxes.

James Sinden, who lives nearby, was pulling out of his driveway and saw the accident.

"When it hit the Dumpster, the car went airborne," Sinden said. "It just did a flip in midair. When I saw it up in the air, my heart just went up my throat."

Don Parsons felt a similar shock. He was heading home to catch some sleep, driving west on Chancey Road, when he also witnessed the crash.

"I saw this car just doing a dance on the road," Parsons said. "It hit the Dumpster and just went into the air."

Trooper Terry Sims said he thought Davis likely was speeding in the 45 mph zone when the accident happened.

"I'd say she probably was doing 65," Sims said. "You don't do that much damage by doing the speed limit."

It was unclear Wednesday whether Davis and her passenger were wearing their seat belts, though witnesses thought that they were.

Davis was flown by helicopter to St. Joseph's Hospital in Tampa. The other passenger was taken to East Pasco Medical Center in Zephyrhills, Sims said.
