BASKETBALL: Dunedin's Sarita Merricks signed with St. Petersburg Junior College.

As a four-year varsity player, Merricks finished third on the school's all-time scoring list with 943 points.

As a senior, she averaged 13.8 points per game and was a first-team all-conference selection.

Seminole's A.J. Gibbs signed with Webber College, an NAIA Division II school in Babson Park.

He was a two-year starter for the Warhawks and helped them to a 12-13 record last season.

BASEBALL: St. Petersburg Catholic right-hander Trent Moore signed with Pasco-Hernando Community College.

Moore was 7-6 with a 2.86 ERA and 68 strikeouts in 76 innings this season in helping the Barons to a 16-12 record.

SWIMMING: Peggy Hughes of St. Petersburg set a national record recently in winning her age division in the U.S. Masters National Championship 2-Mile Cable Swim in Indianapolis.

Hughes, 80, swam the race in 1 hour, 41 minutes and 17 seconds. Robert Beach, 70, also competed, finishing in 1:02.19.

Hughes swims for the Florida Maverick Masters. Beach swims for St. Pete Masters.

MARTIAL ARTS: Three St. Petersburg residents recently won medals in their age divisions at the tae kwon do Junior Olympics at the Tampa Convention Center.

Andre McKenzie took silver in the 10- to 11-year-old boys Blue Belt Division.

Justin DiNobile won bronze in the 14- to 15-year-old boys Blue Belt Division, and Michelle Aajian captured bronze in the 8- to 9-year-old girls Red Belt Division.

PHYSICALS: Physicals for those wanting to play sports this fall at Gibbs High will be available from 3 to 6 p.m. Friday for $20 at Dr. Edward Kucharik's office, 2117 49th St. N. For information, call Dave Cleppe at 384-4748.

SOCCER: MLS Camps, the official camp of Major League Soccer, has one more five-day camp in Pinellas County.

It is from 6 to 9 p.m. July 30-Aug. 3 at St. Petersburg Junior College, Clearwater campus. It costs $105 per participant ages 6 to 18. For information, call Allan Beaver at (727) 536-9443.

Participants will receive an individual player evaluation, Lego gift, soccer ball, T-shirt and companion ticket to an MLS game.

Parents and coaches can attend a free coaching clinic during the week.
