TARPON SPRINGS -- A city parks employee hit and critically injured a pedestrian who stepped into the street Friday morning, police said.
The female pedestrian, whose name was not released because her family had not been notified, was crossing Martin Luther King Jr. Drive in Tarpon Springs, police said. She was outside the crosswalk, west of Alt. U.S. 19, when a city pickup truck driven by Timothy Schultz hit her, police Capt. Bob Kochen said. Schultz was driving west on Martin Luther King and the pedestrian was crossing to the south side of the road, Kochen said.
Schultz tried to stop the 1986 Chevrolet pickup, but hit the woman with the front right corner of the car, Sgt. Jeffrey Young said. She was flown to Bayfront Medical Center in St. Petersburg.
The Police Department is investigating the incident. Kochen said it wasn't immediately clear how much time Schultz had to stop after seeing the pedestrian, but he noted that the accident occurred just a foot past the curb.
Schultz, 44, was hired as a temporary employee in 1994 and a permanent employee in 1996.
He was involved in an accident in 1997 when a car pulled in front of him and Schultz swerved into a telephone pole.
His supervisor, Scott Witt, sent him home Friday because Schultz was shaken up by the accident, Witt said.
