Hometown HernandoBy Times staff writer © St. Petersburg Times, published July 16, 2000 Clubs and Organizations Neighbors finish first and second in Timber Pines Thursday Bowling League. Two teams from the community's Grand Pines Village scored first- and second-place finishes among the 36 teams in the 1999-2000 Timber Pines Thursday Bowling League at Spring Hill Lanes. Team members on the first-place team are: Tony Inguiggato, Pat Hawken, Gabe and Midge Ramant. Members on the runners-up team are: Dutch and Fran Yerger, Doris Lovett and Carol Svabik. Xi Nu Chi Sorority, a chapter of Beta Sigma Phi, recently held its traditional Mother's Day basket raffle. A check of the proceeds for $240 was presented to Stephanie Knight, director of A Woman's Resource Center in Brooksville. Dorothy Leydon of Spring Hill won the basket. On June 8, the Spring Hill Kiwanis Club of the Nature Coast presented a check for $250 to the Lighthouse for the Visually Impaired and Blind to be used for its Little Lighthouse. Accepting the check on behalf of the Lighthouse was manager Marian Robinson. Bill Gemmill, a Kiwanian and Lighthouse volunteer, presented the check. The money will be used toward the purchase of special playground equipment for visually impaired children at the Little Lighthouse.Additionally, the Spring Hill Kiwanis Club sponsored the Cardinals, a team in the Spring Hill Rookie Dixie Baseball League; and made a truckload of donations to Baby Love Pregnancy Crisis Center in Spring Hill. Club members collected diapers, formula, baby food and more, during a charitable softball tournament June 10. The motto of the Kiwanis Club is: "Children-Priority One". Individuals interested in joining the club, may call 686-1422. The High Point Lions Club recently presented donations to several local organizations. Accepting a check for $500 for the Habitat for Humanity organization was George Rodriguez; accepting a check for $1,000 for Hernando County Eyesight Foundation and a check for $100 for Leader Dog wasDon Mills; accepting a check for $1,000 for the Lighthouse for the Visually Impaired and Blind was Diane Ferris; accepting a check for $800 for the Hernando-Pasco Hospice was Beverly Stevens; and accepting a check for $300 for the the High Point Property Home Owners Association to help cover costs for its 4th of July parade was Henry Metzinger. The club raised the donations through monthly derby nights, pancake breakfasts and candy donations. The Timber Pines Garden Club visited the Forest Oaks Nursing Home for their monthly garden therapy June 12. Thirty-seven residents were presented with "bridesmaid" dolls created and completed by Daisy Sathre, and made out of recycled materials. The residents were given various greens and red roses, then shown how to fill in the centers to fashion a bouquet. The greens consisted of live branches and leaves from magnolia and camphor trees, and the leaves from leropi and other plants. Notes of ThanksThe 1999-2000 Central High School Public Speaking and Debate Team would like to thank its generous community sponsors for their support during the past school year. Discount Auto Parts in Spring Hill and in Clearwater for their donations of cash and supplies, and for allowing us to hold our team's car wash at your location. Hernando Pest Control, Inc. was also generous with a cash donation, and Karen MacSweeney of Brooksville donated her time, materials, and craft in producing spirit buttons for sale by the team. Joe Bell and Family Brooksville High FivesCEO of Joni Industries, Gus Guadagnino has been appointed to the Board of Directors of the Deaf Service Center of Pasco/Hernando County, Inc. (DSCPH). The center is a non-profit organization, offering a range of services and programs for deaf, hard of hearing, late deafened, deaf-blind, and hearing individuals to make it possible for all to communicate in the community. In Pasco and Hernando Counties, the estimate number of deaf and hearing impaired people is more than 60,000, joining Tampa Bay as the largest deaf and hearing impaired hub in Florida and the fifth largest in the United States. Individuals needing information regarding the Deaf Service Center may call (800) 940-3323. Powell Middle School recently announced that 63 of their eighth-graders were awarded the President's Award for Educational Excellence. To be selected, students were required to maintain a 3.5 grade point average for three years and score in the 85th percentile or higher in math or reading. Additional criteria included activities in which a student demonstrated high motivation, initiative, integrity, intellectual depth, leadership qualities, and/or exceptional judgement.
