UNIVERSITY NORTH -- It isn't too early to think about school. And for a reminder, how about free physical examinations, immunizations and school supplies?

Community workers hope these and other attractions will bring thousands of children and parents to a health fair Thursday.

More than 40 organizations and companies are sponsoring the fair, which will take place from 2 to 6 p.m. at the University Area Community Center Complex at 14015 N 22nd Street.

"This is a collaboration," said Josie Segura Campbell, an event coordinator for the University Area Community Development Corporation. "Month after month we met, we planned this and we all did this together for the kids because we love them."

The event will feature face painting, clowns, a petting zoo and giveaways for free tickets to Busch Gardens and Tampa Bay Devil Rays games, plus chances to explore a county fire engine. But the free health checks and school supplies are expected to be the biggest draw.

Boxes of school supplies now fill the office of Lori Evans James, local manager for the county's Department of Health and Social Services. Her closet is jampacked with book bags, which will be given away to the children.

"If you open that closet, they'll probably fall out," she joked.

The University Community Resource Center where she works is also supplementing the cost of immunizations and physicals. As many as 400 children will benefit from the shots and physicals, Campbell said. And adults can have blood pressure and cholesterol checks.

The health care and supplies are intended for families who live between Interstate 275, Bruce B. Downs Boulevard, Fowler Avenue and Bearss Avenue. But Campbell said nobody will be turned away.

This year's air-conditioned fair will be a welcome improvement over the 1999 event, when the building was still under construction. "It was hot," she said of the fair, which was otherwise successful.
