Captain's cornerBy LARRY BLUE © St. Petersburg Times, published July 16, 2000 There were just eight fish weighed in the Ladies Shootout on Saturday at Treasure Island, as most anglers dodged thunderstorms throughout the day. Jennifer Bachnik had first-place cobia and trout. The cobia weighed 12.66 pounds while the trout came in at 2.40. Bachnik had to wait out storms while stuck on an island in Tampa Bay. As lightning struck and thunder boomed, she said a prayer or two while waiting to get back to fishing. "Storm after storm came by and the sky was green. It was real neat, but I don't think I want to do it again," Bachnik said. Jean Gifford won the sheepshead category with a 3.2-pounder. She almost didn't make the tournament as the truck towing her boat couldn't get in gear. Fishing in the John's Pass area, she caught a few smaller sheepshead and a small trout. The weather stopped most anglers from fishing offshore, and that portion of the tournament will be rescheduled. Anglers will compete for first-place grouper and amberjack as well as second-place and third-place cobia. Participants can contact TIC for more information. - To contact Larry Blue, call (727) 397-3773 or send e-mail to www.CaptLBlue@aol.com. © St. Petersburg Times. All rights reserved. |
