New book series for boys The first two Time Soldiers books, a new book series for boys up to 10 years old, are in stores now. The series follows the adventures of six kids who discover a time portal and visit the prehistoric age. The first two books in the series are Rex and Rex2 (Big Guy Books, $12.95 each). Bookstore offers kids reading program Kids in first through sixth grades can participate in Barnes & Noble bookstores' summer reading program now through Sept. 8. Here's what you do: (1) Read any eight age-appropriate books. (2) Fill out a summer reading journal, available at Barnes & Noble (3) Have your parent or guardian sign the journal (4) Turn in the journal and get a free book from a list of available titles. 'Animorphs' author at it again K.A. Applegate, the author of Animorphs, is writing a new sci-fi series called The Mayflower Project. The first book, Remnants (Scholastic, $4.99), is in stores now. The action centers around a select group of people who escape Earth in a shuttle as an asteroid heads straight for the planet. Teen Read Week celebrates fantasy Mark your calendars for the annual Teen Read Week. This year's national event takes place Oct. 14-20 and has the theme "Make Reading a Hobbit." Teen Read Week 2001 will celebrate the popularity of fantasy literature. The Young Adult Library Services Association recommends the following fantasy books for teens: The Hobbit, J.R.R.
