College for Kids program still accepting students

St. Petersburg College is still accepting students for its College for Kids summer program. The college is offering one- and two-week classes in art, computers, languages, science, math and sports at several locations, including Madeira Beach Middle School and Perkins, Pinellas Central and Sexton elementary schools.

New units in each class title are presented for each week or two-week session. Students who have completed grades K-5 are eligible.

College for Kids hours are 7:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. The weekly fee is $75. College for Kids II, from 2:30 to 5:30 p.m., is $20 per week.

For information, call Anna Goree, 341-4456, or visit the college's Web site, www.spjc.edu.

Pinellas schools seek volunteer mentors

The Pinellas County school district's Office of Community Involvement is seeking volunteer tutors and mentors for the 2001-2002 school year.

Tutors are needed to work with individual students or with small groups of prekindergarteners through 12th-graders who need reinforcement in basic skills. Volunteers also are needed to tutor students in vocational, career and technical schools.

Tutors of English for speakers of other languages are needed to help non-English-speaking students with speaking, reading and writing skills. Volunteers do not need to speak the students' native languages.

Mentors are needed to work one on one with struggling students and to motivate them to stay focused on school. Mentors provide encouragement to students who need to build self-esteem through tutoring, setting short-term goals and serving as role models. They are required to attend a Pinellas County school district mentor workshop.

For information, call the community involvement office, 588-6405.
