Pinellas schools seek volunteer mentorsThe Pinellas County school district's Office of Community Involvement is seeking volunteer tutors and mentors for the 2001-2002 school year. Tutors are needed to work with individual students or with small groups of prekindergarteners through 12th-graders who need reinforcement in basic skills. Volunteers also are needed to tutor students in vocational, career and technical schools. Tutors of English for speakers of other languages are needed to help non-English-speaking students with speaking, reading and writing skills. Volunteers do not need to speak the students' native languages. Mentors are needed to work one on one with struggling students and to motivate them to stay focused on school. Mentors provide encouragement to students who need to build self-esteem through tutoring, setting short-term goals and serving as role models. They are required to attend a Pinellas County school district mentor workshop. For information, call the community involvement office, 588-6405.
