No contract yet for Weinke
CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- Former Florida State quarterback and Heisman Trophy winner Chris Weinke's agent met with a Panthers official Tuesday, attempting to complete deals before the start of training camp.
Tom Condon, who also represents linebacker Dan Morgan, visited with Marty Hurney, director of football operations, but no agreements were reached. Morgan, Weinke and safety Jarrod Cooper are the only unsigned Panthers. Morgan and Weinke have a chance to compete for starting jobs when rookies report to training camp Sunday afternoon.
DAVIE -- The Miami Herald reported Tuesday that Dolphins veteran wide receiver O.J. McDuffie is not expected to practice early in training camp and could end up on the physically unable to perform list.
McDuffie's left big toe, which has bothered him since it was injured at the end of the 1999 season, still isn't in good enough condition to go through the rigors of practice. The toe has twice been operated on, and McDuffie missed the first seven games of last season.
McDuffie intends to participate in all meetings and be at practices as an observer.
BEARS: Linebacker Jim Emanuel agreed to terms, while the team rounded out its scouting staff with five additions, including Morocco Brown as assistant director of pro personnel.
BENGALS: Fourth-round draft pick Rudi Johnson signed a three-year, $1.23-million contract, agent Peter Schaffer said.
BRONCOS: Pro Bowl center Tom Nalen will be at training camp.
Fears about Nalen's slow recovery from two off-season surgical procedures have given way to optimism, after he took a cortisone injection in his abdominal region last month.
Nalen's schedule, instituted by trainer Steve Antonopulos and approved by coach Mike Shanahan, calls for him to participate in only one of the two-a-day sessions.
The eighth-year pro had a hernia operation in January and a follow-up operation to repair a torn stomach/groin muscle in March.
CHARGERS: Guard-center Chris Brymer signed a one-year deal. The Chargers appear to be close to a deal with linebacker Zeke Moreno, one of their two fifth-round draft picks.
PACKERS: Quarterback Billy Joe Tolliver, cut by Chicago, signed as a backup for Brett Favre. The team released rookie quarterback Jonathan Beasley.
RAIDERS: The odds of free-agent wide receiver Andre Rison re-signing are a long now that he faces the prospect of missing the first quarter of the regular season.
Rison faces a possible four-game suspension for failure to abide by the mandated aftercare conditions for a repeat offender in the NFL's substance, alcohol and steroid abuse programs, according to a story on ESPN.com Monday.
