Hillsborough: Tampa City Council to discuss face scanning, same-sex benefits

The Tampa City Council will hold its regular meeting this morning with two hot items on the agenda -- the city pension fund and the face scanning cameras in Ybor City.

The meeting will start at 9 a.m. with discussion about whether same-sex partners should receive benefits. The issue comes in the wake of the fatal shooting of Tampa police Officer Lois Marrero, who leaves behind a life partner, police Detective Mickie Mashburn. Mashburn was denied Marrero's benefits because they were not married.

About 11:30 a.m., the council is expected to decide the future of face scanning cameras in Ybor City. Some members want to stop police from using the software to try to match the faces of Ybor revelers with those of criminals, saying it's an invasion of privacy. The City Council voted unanimously back in May to enter into a one-year trial period, but some later said they didn't understand what they had voted for.

The meeting will take place at 315 E Kennedy Blvd., on the third floor.
