FOOTBALL: Jefferson's John Jones will receive a financial aid package to play at Division III Elmhurst (Ill.) College. The 5-foot-7, 175-pound Jones caught 15 passes and scored seven touchdowns last year while playing primarily as a third-down back and blocking fullback.

He started at free safety as a junior.

Brandon High will hold an organizational meeting today for the upcoming season. All varsity and junior varsity players and parents should meet in the school auditorium at 7 p.m.

Topics to be covered include physicals, athletic applications, important dates and the booster club.

TRACK: Sickles' Alana Singleton has signed a scholarship with South Florida, where she will compete in the discus, shot put, hammer and javelin. Singleton, who placed eighth in the discus at the Class 6A state meet, has a personal-best discus throw of 127 feet, 3 inches.

She said she also considered offers from Central Florida, Florida Atlantic and Jacksonville. "USF is in a great conference, and I feel can grow there," she said.

"I really think the coaches at USF can take me to the next level."

SUMMER CAMPS: The Hillsborough County Parks and Recreation Department has one camp remaining -- tennis, starting Monday -- at Leto High.

The camp will be held from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. and is open to kids ages 9-17.

Each camper must bring a lunch.

The $5 cost per camp will be donated to the scholarship foundation of the Friends of the County Parks.

Advanced registration is required.

GOLF: The 2001 Summer Golf Series will benefit patient services programs.

Tournaments will be a two-person scramble format at Countryway Golf Club, 11111 Waters Ave., Tampa. Entry fee includes lunch, drinks, prizes and awards. Tournaments are scheduled for Aug. 9 and Sept. 13.

Registration begins at 8 a.m. with a shotgun start at 9 a.m. Cost is $40 per person.

Hole sponsorships are available for $125 for the series.

MISCELLANEOUS: Riverview High will hold a fall sports information meeting at 7:30 p.m. July 30 in the auditorium, immediately following the ninth-grade orientation.

Fall sports coaches will be available to answer questions, and paperwork will be available.

Tryouts and practices for all fall sports begin Aug. 6.

Any Alonso High students interested in participating in cheerleading, cross country, golf, volleyball and football need to attend a meeting at 7 p.m. July 31 at the Alonso High auditorium.
