Second Warhawk agrees to contract

Former Seminole shortstop Bryan Bass, the 31st overall pick in the June draft, has signed with Baltimore and been assigned to its Gulf Coast (Rookie) League affiliate in Sarasota.

Bass' parents, Barbara and Steve, represented him in negotiations.

"He signed (Friday), and then the league approved the contract," Barbara Bass said. "There was a technicality in the writing, but it got straightened out. With him being a two-sport athlete, the wording has to be the way the commissioner's office wants it."

Bass, who was the first sandwich pick of the draft (a supplemental selection between the first and second round), also is a wide receiver who signed to play football for Alabama.

However, he has no immediate plans to play two sports.

"Bryan won't be playing football this fall," Barbara Bass said. "He'll be in the Instructional League."

Bass hit .414 (12-for-29) in 10 games this past season for Seminole before being ruled ineligible because of a residency flap.

He had attended Fort Lauderdale Westminster in the fall and Fayette (Ala.) during his junior year.

Bass is off to a good start with the Orioles. The 6-foot-1, 185-pound switch-hitter had four hits in a doubleheader Monday and two hits Tuesday. In five games, he is 8-for-21 (.381) with two triples.

Bass joins John Killalea (Cardinals) as the first two of six Seminole players drafted this year to sign.

First baseman Casey Kotchman, the 13th overall selection by the Angels, said Tuesday he is close to signing.
