USF announces football slate for TV
South Florida's four road football games, all against Division I-A opponents, including the Aug. 30 season opener against Northern Illinois, will be televised this season, along with live coverage of the Oct. 27 home game against Division I-AA Liberty and a tape-delayed telecast of the Nov. 3 homecoming game against Houston.
Fox Sports Net and WMOR-Ch. 32 will televise three games apiece in the Bulls' first season in Division I-A.
All 11 games will be broadcast live on WQYK-AM 1010.
Juan Antonio Samaranch, the former IOC president, was taken to hospital Wednesday suffering from fatigue.
The 81-year-old, whose 21-year reign as president ended Monday, said he felt ill during a radio interview at about midnight in Lausanne, Switzerland.
"He is suffering from extreme fatigue," the IOC said in statement. The hospital said his condition is improving and that the doctor advised him to stay for a few days.
Jacques Rogge, a Belgian surgeon, replaced Samaranch as president after Monday's vote by IOC members in Moscow. Samaranch will be unable to attend a ceremony to hand over the keys of office to Rogge in Lausanne on Friday, the IOC added.
MORE OLYMPICS: Organizers of Houston's bid for the 2012 Summer Games made their final pitch to USOC members after a two-day tour of six proposed sites. "We're through talking and we're through looking," said Tom Lotz, sports director for the Houston 2012 Foundation. "I think we've had a great two days with them." The USOC will select the U.S. bid city in October 2002. The International Olympic Committee will name the 2012 host city in September 2005. SOCCER: Peru upset Mexico 1-0 to earn a spot in the quarterfinals of the Copa America tournament in Cali, Colombia. Roberto Holsen scored three minutes into the second half to boost Peru from last place in Group B into a tie for first with Mexico. Peru faces Chile in the quarterfinals.
TENNIS: Defending champion Franco Squillari beat qualifier Rogier Wassen 6-3, 6-1 to reach the third round of the Mercedes Cup in Stuttgart, Germany. Second-seeded Yevgeny Kafelnikov advanced when his opponent, Andrea Gaudenzi, quit during a second-set tiebreaker. ... Second-seeded Alex Corretja advanced to the third round of the Energis Open in Amsterdam, Netherlands, beating Olivier Mutis 6-2, 4-6, 6-4.
MORE COLLEGE FOOTBALL: Clarence Young, a reserve defensive back was suspended by Indiana after being jailed on a rape charge. Young was released from Monroe County (Ind.) Jail after posting a $20,000 bond. Young faces up to 20 years in prison if convicted.
COLLEGE BASKETBALL: Alabama senior forward Sam Haginas quit the team and signee Lucky Williams is expected sit out his freshman season as a partial academic qualifier, coach Mark Gottfried said. Guard Antoine Pettway, a key walk-on reserve, will get a scholarship, Gottfried said.
WOMEN'S BASKETBALL: Forward Shalicia Hurns, suspended two weeks ago by Purdue for underage drinking, has been charged with marijuana possession and leaving the scene of an accident. Jay Cooperider, the school's director of athletic communications, said Curry and the athletic department would not comment.
COLLEGES: John Marinatto, removed July 6 as Providence's athletic director, quit rather than take a newly created fund-raising post. ... Vanderbilt athletic director Todd Turner was given a new contract running through 2006.
TRACK AND FIELD: Maurice Greene, the Olympic gold medalist, world-record holder at 100 meters, said tendinitis in his left knee could prevent him from defending his 200 title at the World Championships in Edmonton next month.
GOLF: Crystal River's Joe Cioe finished with 31 on the back nine to shoot 5-under 67, and was tied for first at 138 with Jason Colavito at the New England Pro Tour's North Brentwood Open in Keene, N.H. The final round is today.
SWIMMING: Evgueni Bez-routchenko surged into the lead in the final kilometer and won the men's 10-kilometer open water race by two seconds at the world championships in Fukuoka, Japan.
HORSES: A positive post-race test on Baltimore Gray, first in the eighth race May 25 at Belmont Park, has led to the 15-day suspension of trainer Scott Lake. A post-race urine test revealed the vasodilator Clenbuteral in Baltimore Gray's system. The trainer also was fined $2,000.
WRESTLING: German wrestler Alexander Leipold had his suspension for doping cut to one year, but will not regain his Olympic gold medal. The Court of Arbitration for Sport reduced Leipold's two-year international suspension for doping to 12 months, and he will be free to begin competing again in October. The court refused to return Leipold's gold medal, which was given to losing finalist Brandon Slay of the United States.
MEDIA: Former NFL linebacker Chris Spielman joined ESPN as a college football analyst.
