with hand injury

TORONTO -- The pain was so sharp in Vinny Castilla's hand and wrist, he was not sure where the ball had hit him.

The Devil Rays third baseman fell to his knees Thursday night after being struck on the right palm by a John Frascatore fastball in the fifth inning.

Taken to Mount Sinai hospital for X-rays, Castilla was told there were no broken bones. "I thought it was broken for sure," Castilla said. "It hit me square. I was in so much pain."

Preliminary X-rays showed no broken bones for Rays third baseman Vinny Castilla, hit on the right wrist in the fifth, but he is expected to miss several games.
Castilla is scheduled to have more X-rays in New York today. He is expected to miss at least several games because of bruising.

"I would think it will take a few days because it's so sore right now," Castilla said. "If it's still bothering me in four or five days, we'll have to look at it again to see if there's anything wrong in there."

The swollen hand continues what has been the most frustrating season of Castilla's career. After five years without spending time on the disabled list, Castilla opened the year on the DL with a strained oblique muscle and went back on the shelf in June with a back injury.

Ozzie Guillen and Russ Johnson will take Castilla's spot at third.
