LARGO -- A 43-year-old Largo man was charged Wednesday with attempted murder after police said he shot a man during a drug deal.

Cecil Ray Barney of 2989 Willow Ave., Unit A, fired about six bullets at 25-year-old Shawn T. Swofford on Sunday, police reports said. One bullet struck Swofford's head, cutting him. Swofford, who lives on Starkey Road in Largo, could not be reached for comment Thursday.

According to a police report, he was treated at Morton Plant Hospital in Clearwater and released.

Barney and Swofford met to conduct a drug transaction, police said. At some point there was a scuffle. Barney then ran to a nearby alley and got a gun he had hidden. He returned to the scene, near Woodrow Avenue and Fifth Street NW, firing a .32-caliber revolver at the victim, police said.

Barney was arrested Wednesday after police said they found him on East Bay Drive with 26 grams of cocaine. During questioning, he admitted the Sunday shooting, police said.

In addition to attempted murder, Barney was charged with possession of cocaine with intent to distribute.

He was being held in Pinellas County Jail on Thursday afternoon without bail.
