Weeks of phone calling have paid off for local Democrats: Republican State Rep. Heather Fiorentino has an opponent.
Environmental activist Carlene Hobbs filed papers Tuesday to challenge Fiorentino for the District 46 seat in the state House of Representatives. Hobbs, 51, filed as a Democrat just one day before today's noon cutoff for candidates to qualify to run.
Hobbs has made a name for herself by monitoring cleanup efforts of the Stauffer Superfund site just south of the Pasco border, where 300,000 cubic yards of contaminated, radioactive soil has been sitting for more than 20 years. The site still awaits cleanup.
It will be an interesting matchup with Fiorentino, who sits on the House Committee on Environmental Protection and established a local council to receive input from constituents on environmental issues.
The general election is Nov. 7.
