Woman, 76, kills abusive husband, police sayBy Times staff writers © St. Petersburg Times, published July 23, 2000 GAINESVILLE -- A 76-year-old woman shot and killed her husband of more than 50 years Friday, as he choked her during an argument, police said. Ola Burns Hines shot her 80-year-old husband, Isiah "Izell" Hines, in the chest with a .32-caliber handgun, police said. Police Detective Reginald Johnson said Hines was choking his wife when she reached into a drawer and pulled out the gun. "Our investigation shows this was self-defense," Johnson said. "She's a very fragile lady who has a long history of illness." Police say there was a history of domestic violence at the house, and that no charges would be filed. - From staff, wire reports © St. Petersburg Times. All rights reserved. |
