Skidmore wrestles 2 wins away from national foesBy BRANT JAMES and CAREY FREEMAN
© St. Petersburg Times, Former Lecanto wrestler Harold Skidmore was 2-1 after the first day of the double-elimination Greco-Roman phase of the Junior Nationals at the FargoDome in Fargo, N.D. Skidmore lost his opening-round match Sunday in the A pool of the 132-pound bracket, but he won his next two bouts to advance to the fourth round. Skidwore, who graduated last spring, signed with Appalachian State and was the runner-up in the 130-pound class of the Florida Finals in February. He was the runner-up at 119 pounds his junior year. The Junior Nationals' freestyle competition, the discipline practiced during the high school season, begins later this week. Former Springstead High champion Gerard DeCristofaro was 2-1 after the first day. He opened the tournament in Pool B of the 143-pound class with an 11-0 loss to Utah's Zach Lamano. DeCristofaro then posted a 5-4 win over Illinois' Chad Isaacson and eliminated Wisconsin's Matt Lapinski 11-1 to set up a meeting with Kansas' Jared Vogul in the fourth round. Hernando's Billy Combs won his opener in Pool B of the 132-pound bracket by pinning North Carolina's Rick Siebold, but Combs lost his next two matches. Hernando County's Matt and Nate Booker, Fabian Lewars and Charlie Combs are scheduled to compete in the freestyle competition for Team Florida. BASEBALL: The Central Citrus All-Stars are alive and kicking. After dropping its first game in the Section I Junior Tournament in St. Augustine, Central Citrus defeated Deltona 8-0 in the loser's bracket Sunday. Starting pitcher Todd Bayer allowed just 5 hits and struck out 8 in 7 innings, but it was his performance at the plate that really stood out. Bayer had two home runs, including a grand slam, and finished with a game-high 6 RBI. Central Citrus was scheduled to play Fort Braden on Monday. "The boys are excited, and we're doing well," manager David Hoggard said. "Our chances are good to continue on and go to state. There's a lot of stiff competition up here, but nobody who's better than we are. If we get the hits at the right time, we'll be moving on." Central Citrus dropped a 6-3 decision to Defuniak Springs in its opening game Saturday. SOCCER: It was only two minutes, but that's plenty when you've played just 27 minutes all season. Former Springstead High School standout Jennifer O'Sullivan got into the final minutes of the New York Power's 2-1 Women's United Soccer Association loss to host Atlanta on Sunday after defender Gro Espeseth earned a yellow card in the 88th minute. O'Sullivan, a 22-year-old defender, had not played since June 30, when she logged the final four minutes of a 1-1 tie at San Diego. The former captain of two Pac-10 champion teams at Stanford has played in part of four games for the third-place Power (6-5-5). © 2006 • All Rights Reserved • St. Petersburg Times
