County plans ceremony to recognize POWs, MIAsSPRING HILL -- An open-house ceremony recognizing those who were prisoners of war and missing in action in World War II, Korean War, Vietnam War and Persian Gulf War is being planned for Sept. 22 at VFW Post 10209, 15166 Spring Hill Drive. The event will include high school bands, color guards, flyovers, keynote speakers and more. Ceremonies will begin at 1 p.m. and conclude with a candlelight vigil at dusk. The event is sponsored by the Hernando County Board of Commission, Hernando County Office of Veterans Services and the POW/MIA Committee Inc. Call Deron Mikal at 754-4033. Classes for CPR, lifeguard and preschoolers offeredThe Hernando County Recreation Department is offering the following programs: American Red Cross Community CPR Certification -- Adult, Infant and Child CPR, 5:30 to 10 p.m. July 31, Community Activity Center, 205 E Fort Dade Ave., Brooksville. The cost is $20. Advanced registration and payment are required. Space is limited to eight participants. This class does not include first-aid certification. Karousel Kids, a preschool program for ages 3 to 5. The program will be from 9 a.m. to noon at two locations in September, October and November: Community Activity Center in Brooksville; and Delta Woods Park, 3400 Deltona Blvd., Spring Hill. Children will participate in arts and crafts, storytelling and playground time. There is a $10 one-time non-refundable registration fee per child. Call for program fees. American Red Cross Guardstart for ages 11 to 14. This is a new program that provides students with the knowledge and skills to prepare them for lifeguarding. Participants learn how to prevent drownings, swimming skills, the basics of emergency response techniques, decision-making and the responsibilities of a lifeguard as a professional. Classes will be at the Community Activity Center in Brooksville. Swim sites will be throughout the county, including Pine Island and Rogers Park. The program will be from 10:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Aug. 6-10. The cost is $55, which includes community CPR and first-aid certification, a T-shirt, whistle, manual package and shadow-time guarding. Advanced payment and registration is required. All payments, unless otherwise noted, are to be made to the Hernando County Recreation Department, 205 E Fort Dade Ave., Brooksville.
