TAMPA -- John Idzik, the man responsible for managing the salary cap and so many signings for the Bucs, has a more visible role.

Idzik was named assistant general manager by the Bucs on Monday. But he didn't take any time to celebrate the promotion.

Instead, Idzik concluded deals for a pair of players -- tight end Dauntae Finger and receiver Gerald Harris.

Finger, the first of the team's three seventh-round picks, signed a three-year contract worth about $930,000 and includes about a $30,000 signing bonus.

Only two of the Bucs' nine draft picks remain unsigned -- first-round tackle Kenyatta Walker and fourth-round safety John Howell.

Harris was the second-leading receiver for the Amsterdam Admirals of NFL Europe this spring. He entered the league as a free agent from Washington but the Tennessee Titans cut him in training camp and Harris did not play in 2000.

The Bucs have 86 players on the roster and can begin training camp Sunday with as many as 88.

Keeping track of them all is Idzik, who is in his ninth year in the Bucs personnel department, the past five as director of football operations.

"Our goal as an organization has been to promote from within and reward those who have contributed to the success of the team, as John has," Bucs general manager Rich McKay said.
