Captain's CornerBy Brent Gaskill © St. Petersburg Times, published July 25, 2000 Are the kids sitting around the house looking for something to do? Plan a fishing trip. The trip does not have to be complicated, and you might end up getting the kids hooked on a lifelong hobby. Don't worry about what you catch. Bringing home dinner may just be a bonus. Plan the day around the kids. Allow them to have fun and learn about the outdoors. Sometimes what is packed for lunch is just as important as what fish are caught. Take the time to teach the kids how to bait a hook, safely handle a pocketknife or tie a fishing knot. Show the kids how to handle and release fish, and encourage them to respect nature. Looking back, fishing trips weren't always about the fish we caught. It was the little things associated with it. Just being out there trying was always better than sitting around the house.
