DeCristofaro beat in national Greco-Roman

Gerard DeCristofaro's participation in the Greco-Roman phase of the Junior National Championships ended Monday. He was eliminated by Kansas' Jared Vogel in the fifth round of the double-eliminationwrestling tournament in Fargo, N.D.
DeCristofaro, a recent Springstead High School graduate who was a 140-pound state champion, fell 14-10 to Vogel. DeCristofaro had opened the tourney with a loss before winning 5-4 and 11-1 decisions to remain in contention.
DeCristofaro will compete in the freestyle phase of the tournament beginning Friday.
Hernando County's Matt and Nate Booker, Fabien Lewars and Billy and Charlie Combs are scheduled to compete in the freestyle tourney as part of Team Florida.
Harold Skidmore, a state runner-up at 130 pounds who graduated from Lecanto this spring, also was bounced in the fifth round when he lost 15-3 to Team Missouri's Jon Ott.
The 31st Junior Nationals has become a mecca for aspiring intercollegiate and international wrestlers. Until the Sydney Games, a former Junior Nationals champion had won a gold medal in every Olympics since 1984.
BASEBALL: The Hernando Youth League 14-year-olds were defeated 9-6 by Pensacola Belleview on Tuesday in the second round of the Dixie League State Tournament in Bartow.
The teams were forced to play Tuesday morning after being rained out Monday. HYL was scheduled to face host Bartow in the next round of the double-elimination tourney Tuesday night.
