Florida's fabulous birds

photo

"A happy medium" is what Tampa artist John Costin has discovered in making etchings of Florida birds for his book in progress, a limited edition of 150 copies. Three prints from the book, as well as other works such as Great Blue Heron Vista, a hand-colored etching shown here, are on view at Painted Fish Gallery through Sept. 2. Each etching is hand-colored with oils. Costin, a bird lover, turned to etchings as a more accessible and profitable way of using his talent than his previous avant-garde art. The book will be in the Florida Archives in the State Library in Tallahassee; only a handful of copies remain available for private sale. Painted Fish is at 350 Main St., Dunedin. Hours are 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday through Sunday (closed Monday). Free. Call (727) 786-0984.
