This year's event delivers hot rock and alt acts such as 311, Alien Ant Farm, Rancid, Pennywise and more.

Trying to find a chick onstage during the Vans Warped Tour '01 festivities is like looking through one of those Where's Waldo books. You figure there's gotta be a girl there somewhere, but heck if you can find her.

The Warped Tour, with only a handful of exceptions in the past (the Donnas, the Lunachicks and Olympic snowboarder Tara Dakides), has been for seven years a celebration of the XY chromosome. It's a boy thing.

To try to make up a bit for the lack o' girls, the current rendition of Vans Warped has a separate Ladies Lounge area, where we XX chromosome types can hear female DJs, check out chick skateboarders and pal around with other cool dames who ride Surf Diva boards and play Daisy Rock guitars.

Thank goodness both boys and girls dig being in the mosh pit and bopping their heads, sore necks and all, to the Warped acts.

This year's line-up is what we've come to expect from the tour: hot rock and alternative acts who have been or are currently topping the charts.

That would be your ska-funk rockers 311; your Alien Ant Farm, with not one but two hits on radio right now, including that fabulous Smooth Criminal Michael Jackson cover; Rancid; the rockin' Pennywise; ska freaks Less Than Jake, Fenix TX and Bouncing Souls.

Canadian pop punks Sum 41
Warped also brings to town exciting up-and-comers such as Canadian pop punks Sum 41; the old-school, hard-core band River City High; R&B-meets-Rasta act Morgan Heritage; and Me First and the Gimme Gimmes, the best band name I've heard all year.

A special treat: wonky hip-hop innovator Kool Keith, who has been dazzling fans for years with his stints in the Ultramagnetic MCs and with solo turns as Dr. Octagon and Black Elvis.

Other acts on this Tampa date include AFI, Bumruckus, Destruction Made Simple, Esham, the Explosion, Good Charlotte, H20, Jimmy Eat World, the Line, Madcap, Midtown, Pepper, Rockin Horse, Showoff and the Vandals.
