Times scholarships awarded to 31 students interested in journalism

ST. PETERSBURG -- The St. Petersburg Times Scholarship Fund awarded $93,200 in scholarships Wednesday to 31 college students interested in careers in journalism.

Thirteen of the winners worked as interns this summer in the news, advertising and circulation departments of the Times. The others are enrolled in college journalism or communications programs.

The intern winners of named scholarships are:

Aline Mendelsohn of Indiana University. She received the Poynter Scholarship, established in 1975 and named for Nelson Poynter, former Times Publishing Co. chairman and former student at IU.

Matthew Dees of the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill. He received the Robert T. Pittman Scholarship, established in 1994 and named for the former vice president and editor of editorials. Pittman retired in 1991.

Lamar Wilson of Florida A&M University. He received the Peggy M. Peterman Scholarship, established in 1997 and named for the reporter, columnist and editorial writer who retired in 1996. Wilson also is a Dow Jones Newspaper Fund editing intern.

Mary Carmichael of Duke University. She received the Bryanna Latoof Green Scholarship, established in 1998 to honor a reporter who died of breast cancer.

Luke Otten of the Ringling School of Art and Design. He received the Gray McGhee Scholarship, established in 1998 to honor the advertising department's art director who died that year of leukemia.

Other interns receiving awards are:

Katherine Blok, University of Maryland-College Park.

Courtney Danehy, University of Kentucky.

Reid Epstein, Emory University.

Traci Johnson, Troy State University. She also received a scholarship from the Association for Women in Sports Media.

Mattias Karen, Western Kentucky.

Matthew May, University of Florida.

Kevin Sullivan, San Jose State University.

Yilu Zhao, New York University.

The remaining scholarship winners are:

Charles Cardwell, University of South Florida; Carlos Cespedes and Carl Willis, Florida State University; Laura Ciociola, University of Florida; Jeff Darlington, University of Florida; Mauli Desai, University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill; Robyn Disney, University of South Florida; Lindsay Foster, St. Petersburg Junior College; Rebecca Goodman, University of Kansas; Autumn Guthrie, St. Petersburg Junior College; Tyrese Howard, Wake Forest University; Jessica Hu, Harvard University; Whitney LaPolla and Brent Solomon, University of Florida; Micheline Mendelsohn, Indiana University; Corey Resnick, University of Pennsylvania; Mario Rodriguez, New College/University of South Florida; and Daniel Stein, Yale University.

The scholarship fund, originally called the Poynter Fund, was established in 1953 by Times Publishing Co. to encourage and financially assist students interested in journalism. Times Publishing produces the St. Petersburg Times, as well as Congressional Quarterly and Florida Trend and Governing magazines.
