Assistant county attorney will leave for another job

INVERNESS -- Assistant County Attorney Carl Kern announced Thursday that he will leave in two weeks to become Flagler County attorney. "I want to be county attorney," Kern said and noted he was the Hendry County attorney before coming here in November 1999. Kern had hoped to succeed Larry Haag as Citrus County attorney, but commissioners in March tapped then-Brooksville City Attorney Robert Battista for the post. "When I didn't make it here," Kern said, "it was a big disappointment to me, and I thought I'd have to try somewhere else." Kern said he enjoyed his time in Citrus and had a good working relationship with Battista, commissioners and county staff. "There's no sour grapes," he said.

Commissioner draws first challenger for election

INVERNESS -- The 2002 elections may be a year away, but County Commissioner Jim Fowler has already drawn his first challenger. Floral City resident John T. Thrumston has filed the paperwork to run for the County Commission seat in District 4, covering the southeastern corner of the county. Fowler and Thrumston are both Republicans.
