Dixie Majors World Series

WHERE: North Charleston, S.C. (games played at Collins Park and North Charleston High School)

WHEN: Saturday-Thursday WHO: Teams representing 11 southeastern states plus host site: Lancaster, S.C.; Hope City, Ark.; Lufkin, Texas; Meridian, Miss.; South Boston, Va.; Hardin County, Tenn.; Moss Bluff, La.; AUM (Montgomery), Ala.; Valdosta, Ga.; West Robinson, N.C.; Crystal River; North Charleston, S.C. THE SKINNY: State champions representing 11 states from Texas to Virginia will compete for the Dixie Majors (ages 17-18) World Series title. The double-elimination tournament will be held at two sites and will conclude Thursday. ... This is the first Citrus County team to advance to a Dixie Youth Baseball World Series since the Crystal River Pre-Majors (ages 15-16), led by current major-leaguer Mike Hampton (Colorado Rockies), won the state title in 1989. That team finished in third place in the tournament, which was won by Baton Rouge, La. ... Crystal River beat teams from Inverness and Williston for the district title before winning five consecutive games in Sebring en route to the state title.

OPENING DAY SCHEDULE: Game 1 -- Lancaster, S.C. vs. Hope City, Ark., 10 a.m.; Game 2 -- Lufkin, Texas vs. Crystal River, 10 a.m.; Game 3 -- Meridian, Miss. vs. South Boston, Va., 1 p.m.; Game 4 -- Hardin County, Tenn. vs. Moss Bluff, La., 1 p.m.; Game 5 -- AUM (Montgomery, Ala. vs. Valdosta, Ga., 4 p.m.; Game 6 -- West Robinson, N.C. vs. North Charleston, S.C., 7 p.m.

ITINERARY: Folks looking to give the team a celebratory send-off should meet in the parking lot at Crystal River Mall (in front of KMart) between 6 and 6:30 a.m. Friday. The team will leave -- by caravan -- between 6:30 and 6:45.

UPDATES: Dixie Youth Baseball will be providing updates at its Web site throughout the tournament.
