A boatload of fun
By JORGE SANCHEZ
© St. Petersburg Times, A flotilla of rafts will sprint up the Homosassa River on Saturday during the Super Raft Race 2001, while a young beach crowd parties dockside during the annual Citrus County summer event. The festivities begin at noon at the boardwalk of the K.C. Crumps and Kibbie's Dockside restaurants on Halls River Road in Homosassa Springs. The Iron Dog Man and Miss Hawaiian Tropic contests are first, with muscular men and bikini-clad women competing for the title. The judging is based mostly on crowd reaction. Between the Iron Man and Miss Hawaiian Tropic contests, the crowd of local young people in bathing suits dances to hip-hop and other pop music. The boardwalks are packed with partiers enjoying lots of beer and other beverages offered at the tiki bars. The raft race begins at 2:30 p.m. The race itself is a sprint upriver to Monkey Island, around the island and back again to the K.C. Crumps starting line. The trick in this race is to muster a head of speed up the river, a tight turn around the island and then even more speed down river toward the finish line. As part of the Super Raft Race, sponsored by Citrus 95.3/Country Fox 96.3 radio stations, there will be several give-aways. Among these are a hot tub from EML patio and pool supplies and the radio stations and a $1,500 auto paint job from Wayne & Yvonne's Collision Restoration. Admission to the raft race is free, though there is a charge for parking. The raft race is a fundraiser for the Boys and Girls Clubs of Citrus County.
