Applications accepted for judgeships
The 6th Circuit Judicial Nominating Commission is now accepting applications for attorneys interested in filling three new judgeships created by the state Legislature. Lawmakers created a new Pinellas-Pasco circuit judge position, in addition to a new county judge position in both Pasco and Pinellas counties. Applicants for all positions must be registered voters and must have been members in good standing of the Florida Bar for the proceeding five years. Applicants for the circuit judgeship must be residents of either Pinellas or Pasco. To qualify for the Pinellas County judgeship, an applicant must be a resident of the county, or a resident of Pasco if applying for that judgeship. Those interested in the positions should make 10 copies of their application and return them to commission Vice Chairwoman Elise K. Winters at 600 Cleveland St., Suite 940, Clearwater, FL, 33755 no later than 5 p.m. Aug. 27. Applications, along with instructions, are available from Winters at the same address and also are available on the Florida Bar Web site, www.flabar.org.
CLEARWATER -- Parts of the service road on the south side of the Courtney Campbell Parkway were damaged by Monday's storm. The road has been blocked off with traffic cones since the storm. Waves pounded the seawall and flooded the road during the storm, undermining the road in some places, said Kris Carson, spokeswoman for the Florida Department of Transportation. The DOT will begin repairing the road next week, she said. Repairs are expected to cost about $7,000 and should not interfere with traffic on the main causeway route.
The Long-Term Care Ombudsman Councils of the Tampa Bay area is seeking volunteers to serve as advocates for residents of nursing homes and assisted living facilities to investigate and resolve resident complaints. Volunteers' responsibilities may include periodic inspection of facilities; travel expenses to and from facilities will be reimbursed. Prospective ombudsmen should be free from a conflict of interest and will be interviewed before selection by local council members. The councils also are seeking specialized volunteers such as licensed pharmacists and social workers, elder law attorneys and registered dietitians.
