Dancers, patrons arrested in raid at Redner's clubBy Times staff writer © St. Petersburg Times, published July 29, 2000 TAMPA -- Tampa police raided at least one nude club late Friday, rounding up an unspecified number of dancers and patrons for violating the city's lap dancing ordinance at the Mons Venus on N Dale Mabry Highway. It was at least the fourth raid on the ordinance, a controversial measure passed in December but enforced for only the past two weeks. Joe Redner, owner of Mons Venus, said police officers staked out his club for about 90 minutes beginning at 7:30 p.m., then spent two hours making arrests. He was unsure, and police were unable to say late Friday, how many people were arrested. Redner, who spurringly calls Mayor Dick Greco "Tampa's new morality god," vowed to continue fighting for the rights of dancers and customers. "I'm going to own this city," Redner said. "I'm going to own that mayor." Business at his club was thin just after Friday's raid, but nude lap dances continued and business picked up somewhat as midnight neared. Redner said 2001 Odyssey, a club across the street from his, was also raided by police Friday. The ordinance prohibits nude dancers from being within 6 feet of customers and other dancers. © St. Petersburg Times. All rights reserved. |
