I firmly disagree that Jeff Gordon has assumed Dale Earnhardt's role as the "face of NASCAR" for mainstream fans (After Earnhardt crash, racing still reels, July 21). What a ridiculous statement. There are many good and popular drivers in NASCAR. The one to be the "face of NASCAR" has to earn this prestigious title over a period of many years -- Dale Earnhardt, Richard Petty, Cale Yarborough and others. To date there is no current driver to replace "The Man."

It seems to me that with a Tampa Bay team in the playoffs (the Storm), the least you could do is give it some coverage. Even by posting the scores on the front page under SIDELINE. Most of the stuff there with the exception of Fred McGriff leaving and the Devil Rays certainly doesn't catch my eye.

On July 14, 2001, a great loss was suffered by the horsemen at Tampa Bay Downs with the passing of Tampa Bay Downs HBPA president Leonard Alexander. Having served as president for nearly two terms, Leonard's tireless efforts on behalf of all horsemen were evident in the increased purse structure at Tampa Bay Downs.
In spite of failing health over the past few years, Leonard continued to champion the horsemen's cause until the end.
It is my sincere hope that I will be able to carry on Leonard's exemplary work as president. Even though I have lost a dear friend, I will strive to carry on his legacy of horsemen helping horsemen.
-- Robert A. Jeffries, President Tampa Bay Downs HBPA
There is only one sports writer in this country who would describe the childish and sometimes obscene celebrations by NFL players as exotic creativity (Tackling the fine line of expressionism in today's NFL, July 22). I am looking forward to Mr. Mizell's full retirement.

Shame on Terry Tomalin for resorting to fear and loathing to get people to read his meaningless column (Bull sharks are earning reputation as villains, July 22). Shark attacks are nothing new, but creeps like him can sure exploit and spread fear in folks who hear him tell it. Aren't you embarrassed?
