The week in reviewBy Times staff writers © St. Petersburg Times, published July 30, 2000 A look back at the week's top stories. CHARGES FLY IN STATE ATTORNEY RACE:Challenger Henry Ferro accused incumbent Brad King of protecting a friend and employee five years ago. Ferro said King should have asked the governor to appoint a special prosecutor to investigate whether Assistant State Attorney Rock Hooker was mixed up in the illegal drug trade. King said he would have done so if a drug task force or his internal investigators had yielded evidence of wrongdoing. KAYAK RUN PLAN GETS FIRST GREEN LIGHT: Overcoming the opposition of Gov. Jeb Bush, the developers of a proposed $100-million white-water park on nearby public land got a giant boost from the state. The Board of Trustees, consisting of Bush and the Florida Cabinet, approved a conceptual plan under which Florida would sublease 500 acres along the former Cross Florida Barge Canal for a competition kayak run and a longer raft run. In 12 years, the site, if built, could serve as the venue for Olympic white-water kayaking. MAN GUILTY IN HOME INVASION: A jury found Roger Lamkin guilty of home invasion, robbery, aggravated battery causing great bodily harm to someone older than 65 and grand theft. The charges stem from a Feb. 23, 1999, home invasion in Hernando. The victim was 86-year-old Terrance Young, who was beaten unconscious. © St. Petersburg Times. All rights reserved. |
