Hernando ReviewBy Times staff writer
© St. Petersburg Times, THAT SINKING FEELING: Dozens of sinkholes opened in the vicinity of Spring Hill, mostly along Mariner Boulevard, closing down a segment of that road for about a week. Four homes have been declared structurally unsound as a result of sinkholes in the area. The sinkhole proliferation is blamed on conditions created by the long drought (possibly exacerbated by pumping) coupled with the sudden onset of torrential rains. SANDERS HITS THE ROAD: Hernando County schools superintendent John Sanders looked like he was out as a candidate for Lee County until the top finisher dropped out. Ultimately, however, Sanders negotiated a contract with Lee County officials. He starts his new job on Sept. 4. NO TAX RATE INCREASE: Hernando County commissioners appear to have come up with a balanced $176-million budget for fiscal year 2001-2002 without raising the tax rate. The budget includes money for new deputies in the Sheriff's Office and a rabies control position. TRAGEDY IN MEXICO: The VanSandt family of Spring Hill suffered a tremendous loss when several relatives died in a car crash in Mexico. A naval bus ran a stop sign and slammed into the VanSandts' pickup truck and camper, killing Maria Vasquez, 33, her son, Joshua Paul, 7, and her father, Juan Vasquez, 77. Stories to watch for in the next monthThe school district will start its quest to replace John Sanders on Aug. 7. © 2006 • All Rights Reserved • Tampa Bay Times
