BASEBALL: Plant coach Bo Puckett named Salvy Urso and Carmelo Guggino to his staff.

Urso, a 1989 Plant graduate, will serve as pitching coach. He was a former draft pick of the Seattle Mariners.

Guggino, who helped lead Plant's junior varsity program to championships the past couple of seasons, will act as infield/first base coach.

VOLLEYBALL:Anyone interested in playing volleyball at Plant should pick up the necessary paperwork at the main office from the athletic director's secretary.

The paperwork must be completed and returned by Friday. The first day of practice is from noon to 2 p.m. Aug. 6 at the school. For information, call coach Kimi Hellenberg at 272-3033.

MISCELLANEOUS: Any Alonso High students interested in participating in cheerleading, cross country, golf, volleyball and football need to attend a meeting at 7 tonight at the Alonso High auditorium.

Coaches and school administrators will be on hand to answer any questions.

An informational meeting for Brandon High students interested in participating in cross country, volleyball, swimming and golf will be held at 6:30 Wednesday in the gymnasium. Parents are requested to attend.

Physical and parent permission packets will be available at the meeting or at the school's main office daily from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Practices begin Aug. 6, except for swimming, which begins Aug. 7 at Brandon Swim and Tennis Club.

Jefferson will hold an informational meeting for all prospective fall sports participants at 7 tonight in the high school auditorium.

Information regarding insurance, physicals, policies and procedures will be handed out. For details, call the school at 872-5241.

GOLF: The Tampa YMCA Urban Junior Golf First Tee program is looking for volunteers. High school students, who must be at least 16, can credit their volunteer hours toward service requirements.

The 2001 Summer Golf Series will benefit patient services programs.

Tournaments will be a two-person scramble format at Countryway Golf Club, 11111 Waters Ave., Tampa. Entry fee includes lunch, drinks, prizes and awards. Tournaments are scheduled for Aug. 9 and Sept. 13.

Registration begins at 8 a.m. with a shotgun start at 9 a.m. Cost is $40 per person. Hole sponsorships are available for $125 for the series.
