Oil-soaked rags spark blazeBy Times staff writer © St. Petersburg Times, published August 1, 2000 ST. PETERSBURG -- A house fire Monday on Shore Acres was caused by a spontaneous ignition of rags soaked in linseed oil, firefighters said. No one was injured, but one of four house cats was killed in the fire at 7:13 p.m. at 1818 Bayou Grande Blvd. NE. No one was home. The rags were being used to work on the home's wood ceiling but they caught fire, igniting trash cans and eventually heating a large natural gas storage tank on the west side of the home. Neighbors said they heard at least three explosions. The gas storage tank was venting, causing flames to shoot up along the stilt-style home. Firefighters doused the tank with water. "We heard a bang. A real loud bang," said Ray Roy, 73, who lives a block and a half away. St. Petersburg Fire Lt. Chris Bengivengo said fire damage to the two-story house renders it unliveable. The house, built in 1985, was valued at $100,600 last year, according to Pinellas County property records. Damage is estimated at $80,000, he said. © St. Petersburg Times. All rights reserved. |
