A closer look: one Hillsborough church

LEADERSHIP: Jeronimo Perez has been the pastor for about 12 years. He earned a degree in theology at the National Institute of Nicaragua in Matagalpa. He has been married to Virginia for 45 years, and they have seven children: Mary Helen, Esther, Ruth, Jeronimo Jr., Israel, Obed, and Rachel. They have six grandchildren. Mrs. Perez is a homemaker and works at the church assisting her husband.
SERVICES AND PROGRAMS: Sunday, 10:30 a.m. Sunday school, 11:45 a.m. worship; Tuesday 9 a.m. prayer; and Wednesday, 7:30 p.m. family night. Royal Rangers for boys, Missionettes for girls, youth group, Bible studies, and men's and women's groups.
HISTORY: The church started in 1989 and met at the Pleasant Grove Assembly of God facility in Durant. The congregation moved into its building on Providence Road in November 1999. The congregation is in planning stages for a 2,000-seat sanctuary, a day care center, a school and a prayer tower.
RECENT SERMON TOPIC OR THEME: "The importance of family."
OUTREACH TO THE COMMUNITY: Three times a year the church sponsors a Social Brigade, through which doctors, lawyers, dentists and a barber serve the community. Perez does two daily radio programs which are sent to 250 locations, including Latin America, Spain, and Miami. He is sponsored by the Assembly of God Church. Church members also visit prison inmates and offer a food pantry.
NOTABLE: Services are given, primarily, in Spanish with headsets provided to English-only speakers.
