The week in reviewBy Times staff writers © St. Petersburg Times, published August 6, 2000 A look back at the week's top stories. CONVICTED RAPIST ARRESTED: Timothy Conley, who left state prison in December after serving a sentence for two rapes, was arrested and accused of kidnapping and raping a 17-year-old girl west of Inverness. Conley said the girl accompanied him willingly and then consented to sex. BUSH DECLINES TO INVESTIGATE STATE ATTORNEY: Gov. Jeb Bush has reviewed allegations that State Attorney Brad King mishandled an internal investigation five years ago and decided that an investigation is not warranted. King's political opponent, Henry Ferro, accused the state attorney of playing favorites in 1995 when he declined to seek a special prosecutor to investigate charges that a King staffer was involved in illegal drugs. Bush, relying on a report from the Florida Department of Law Enforcement, said there was no need for further action. BELL STOLEN, RECOVERED: The Crystal River "victory bell" was stolen and then turned up beside a Citrus High School trash bin. A note at the scene referred to the tradition of the bell. From the 1960s through the '80s, Citrus High students have kidnapped the bell and returned it a few days later. © St. Petersburg Times. All rights reserved. |
