Ex-Florida State recruit joins USF

TAMPA -- Running back Quinton Callum, who in 1999 signed a letter of intent with Florida State but never attended, has enrolled at South Florida and reported Sunday to preseason camp.

Callum, a 5-foot-11, 180-pounder, rushed for 1,346 yards and 25 touchdowns as a senior at Lake City Columbia High, leading his team to the Class 6A state final. He spent 1999 at Jones (Miss.) Community College, sat out 2000 and will be eligible this season as a sophomore.

Callum's addition brings the Bulls' list of newcomers to 39 heading into this morning's first practice.

UF freshmen report

GAINESVILLE -- The Gators' freshman class reported and will have its first practice tonight.

About 16 members of the signing class of 18 are expected at practice. Junior college transfer Bryan Savelio enrolled at UF in January and practiced during spring drills.

The freshman class is without fullback Eraste Autin, who died July 25 after collapsing from a heatstroke following a voluntary workout.

UM greets newcomers

CORAL GABLES -- Coach Larry Coker greeted Miami's freshman class of recruits.

"We're glad that everyone reported on time this morning and we're ready to get to work," Coker said. "This always is an exciting day for the players and their families. The look of excitement in the eyes of the new players just tells me one thing: Football season is here."

Along with 19 players who signed with the Hurricanes in February, two new players reported as scholarship players: cornerback Jean Leone of Miami Jackson High and defensive lineman Kyle Morgan of Galileo High in San Francisco.

The newcomers will spend much of the week going through student-athlete orientation. Practices for the newcomers begin Tuesday morning.
